samsung retaliates with their own video

April 7, 2015 by Will Leave a Comment

Samsung-Logo

A few articles ago I mentioned the bend testing on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. The Edge was breaking under extreme testing by SquareTrade. Samsung has replied back with their own video:

Basically this video shows the normal operating force on a device; the force Samsung uses for their device testing.

Before anybody makes any clouded decision on this phone you should note a few things. The Samsung video demonstrates pressures under (what they call) normal to extreme conditions. The SquareTrade testing is looking for a failure point – they are a warranty company, and they need to know the breaking point of a device for their own interests.

Even though some devices are more fragile than others, every device on the market is going to break at one point or another!

why use BBM?

April 5, 2015 by Will Leave a Comment

Rather than a drawn out comparison of available mobile messengers I am simply going to write about the reasons I use BBM. If you don’t use BBM you will be able to go through this and draw your own comparisons.

There was a time when I was using WhatsApp and GTalk more than anything, and I was using a Blackberry at the time. On my old Blackberry Bold, BBM was a great stand by messenger, but it was sadly lacking in features. Of course BBM was only available to Blackberry devices, transfer size was crippling, there weren’t many features.

Things have changed in the past few years! BBM is now available on Android, iPhone, WinPhone, and of course Blackberry. Since some people may be familiar with BBM on a Bold or Curve, here is a quick comparison of BBM then and now:

 old BBMnew BBM
available platformsBlackberryAndroid, Blackberry, iPhone, WinPhone, PC/Mac/Tablet (with Blend)
message retractionnoyes
timed messages (incl. attachments)noyes
file transfer size (pic, video, file, contacts)6 MB16 MB
group messagingnoyes

emote/emoji default~60 (I forget, but this is what I'm seeing on the web)~200 - new emotes always added with updates
banking, money transfernoyes - available in some markets
bbm groupsnoyes
bbm voicenoyes, on all platforms
bbm videonoyes, between Blackberry 10 devices
some available emotes in BBM

some available emotes in BBM

At the time of this writing there 200 emotes/emoji available in chat. There are 150 sticker packs available to buy in BBM Shop. Most of these sticker packs are $1.99, but there are some free ones, and deals (free) can and do happen at any time.

BBM Groups are best described as personal or business microblogs. There are many channels available to follow, and more are added all the time. In the channels you will find fan-based content, shopping channels, deals to be found, personal blogs, jokes and humour, art and photography, business content, and the list goes on …

channels

The other thing I mentioned in the table above is the ability to use BBM on your PC/Mac/Tablet. This is exclusive to Blackberry 10 devices, and Blackberry Blend. I will cover Blend at a later time.

video-screen-share

BBM Voice/Video chat allows two BBM users to communicate with Voice (all platforms) and Video (BBM 10 only). This uses data or WiFi, and allows you to communicate with another BBM user no matter where they are, and no long distance charges are incurred. With Blackberry 10 devices, using video chat, you can also use screen share. This allows you to share your device information with the person on the other end. Other users can also be authorized to control your screen, so if you are having trouble with a certain element – easily get help.

What’s your Pin?

Finally, the most important thing (to me) BBM offers is the Pin system for adding contacts. There are many reasons I don’t like using my phone number; SMS spam and telemarketers being the top two. I have seen and read about cases where people are added to contact lists because they got a phone with a new phone number. Even though this phone number is new to them, somebody else had it before – boom, you’re on a list somewhere with no way to delete or block. There are some apps in the wild that will harvest contact lists and sell this information to telemarketing companies – not possible with a Pin system. I don’t want my phone number to be public information because a friend likes installing every app known to mankind. Also, using this system it’s much easier to control contacts – especially removal and blocking.

Of course there will be those bitching and grumbling about Blackberry this … BBM that … Android FOREVER!!!!!! … my iPhone OMG … I hate Blackberry … are they still around … does anybody use this. This all sounds immature and stupid in my opinion – I think in terms of use and function, not brand loyalty. I was once in a different camp too, but here I am now. To be very blunt – Try it, or shut the hell up!! If you try it, and don’t like it – cool. At least you will have an informed, educated opinion, and not the voice of some trolling grunt.

Happy BBM’ing 🙂

galaxy s6 edge is bendy too?

April 4, 2015 by Will 1 Comment

SquareTrade is a third-party warranty vendor for devices and electronics, so it is probably in their best interest to know the breaking point, or damage point of the devices they warranty. They have released a video showing some bend tests on the new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, and the HTC One M9, and the results are not favourable for people with, or wanting, either device.

The iPhone 6 Plus is mentioned here only because it appeared in the video. I assume it was used as a benchmark because after all the hype in 2014, everybody knows about the bendy iPhone – even people who don’t know what an iPhone is …

iPhone 6 PlusSamsung Galaxy S6 EdgeHTC One M9
Bending force110 lbs110 lbs - screen cracked120 lbs
Breaking force179 lbs149 lbs120 lbs
If and when I find more stats I will add them to the table above.

Although SquareTrade’s testing may seem a bit extreme, it is still interesting to see the breaking point of some devices you may be considering. If nothing else, you may know enough now to remove your phone from your back pocket before sitting down 🙂

ios 8.0.1 fix available

April 4, 2015 by Will Leave a Comment

ios8

If you use an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus and you updated your device to OS 8.0.1, you may have noticed a loss of cellular service and use of Touch ID? There is a fix available from Apple, and they recommend you update as soon as possible. This update also includes the updates and bug-fixes originally in iOS 8.0.01.

You can get the update here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201394

hello, welcome, waves Hi

April 3, 2015 by Will Leave a Comment

hello

Because of some much needed maintenance, things have changed.

I won’t bore you with the long, drawn-out version, but let’s just say that lots of work needed to be done to get things fixed up around here, and I took the easy way out. New website – Bam!

I have removed my other project #ichooseblackberry, and will write here instead. I’ve noticed lately there are too many Blackberry blogs that simply repost everything from Crackberry. Sure, the author does a bit of writing and then provides a link to the Crackberry article, but there are too many re-post blogs. I don’t want to be lumped into that category, because I was posting about other platforms, security, PCs, software, and anything geeky I ran across.

So the new adventure begins …

Look around, comment, suggest, enjoy, …
